-Excerpt from "Faithful"

"Don't you think it's odd that all the abducted children attended your church?"

"Yes, but what can I do? Do you want me to turn these people away at such a tragic time in their lives? I will not let someone else control my church." Zell stated matter-of-factly.

"How do you comfort them after such a loss? You are often at the scene before I am."

"I remind them that this is as close to a perfect town as one can get and therefore their child's disappearance must be in God's plan."

Kiel looked up from his notepad and stared at Zell. He thought to himself that statement was particularly harsh and cold, especially coming from a religious man. Zell didn't seem to notice Kiel's expression; he simply smiled and offered Kiel a refill of his lemonade.

Kiel, feeling uneasy, thanked Zell for his time and excused himself. Once outside, he inhaled a chest full of clean air, and then looked back at the church.

"Strange old coot," Kiel said as he walked back to his car.

There was a message waiting for Kiel when he arrived home. After pouring himself a double shot of vodka and letting Wolf in, he walked over to his answering machine and listened.

"Chief Kiel, you have to stop him. He's killing our children. He'll kill more. Time is running out."

Click. Silence.

Kiel stood there stunned...........
